David Blunkett Guide Dog Retires

Sadie, David and Crosby

Guide Dogs for the Blind are saddened to announce the retirement of possibly their most famous prodigy. David Blunkett’s faithful companion, Sadie, is retiring after more than 9 years of service in which she’s met the Queen and been a regular ‘face’ in the House of Commons!

Coming up to 11th birthday, Sadie will now get a chance to put her paws up in Derbyshire with her new owners for a well earned rest after travelling the country with David for almost a decade.

David said -

We have grown comfortable together. We have grown, if not old, then certainly older, together. Both of us are slightly slower than we used to be; both of us slightly more fussy and demanding. I can barely imagine what life will be without her. As someone recently described it, Sadie has been my left leg, with me through thick and thin.

Sadie was his 5th Guide Dog and he will now be taking charge of Crosby, a 19 month old Labrador-retriever. Now Sadie can look forward to a new life filled with country walks instead of walks around Buckingham Palace. Here’s hoping she has a great retirement and that Crosby is up for the challenge of being one of the countries most high profile Guide Dogs, they are some big paws to fill!
